    Starchy Carbohydrates

This diet is characterized in a controlled carbohydrate diet is structured so as to maintain stable insulin and blood sugar levels. Scientifically speaking you do not need to eat carbohydrates at all, because the body can create glucose (the simplest form of carbohydrate) from amino acids and ketones (fatty acid derivatives) for its energy needs.

Since the body does need carbohydrates in the diet, this means that carbohydrates do not serve a purpose? No, eating carbohydrates is beneficial when you eat the right kind of carbohydrates at specific times. Eat complex carbohydrates (potatoes, or oatmeal and rice) provides your body with energy and helps you recover after a workout.

    Re: Starchy Carbohydrates

To put to better use the carbohydrates you are eating them at times when your body can use them the best thing in the early morning and / or post-workout. Upon waking, the body's sensitivity to insulin is high, which means that less insulin is needed to store the carbohydrates ingested. Remember, insulin blunts the process of burning fat so we want to keep insulin levels under control.

After spending 6-8 hours without food the body is ready to absorb the nutrients you give it. On days when you're not working out, you are to have your carbs first thing in the morning meal.

    Re: Starchy Carbohydrates

If you're working out, then you are to have your carbs post-workout meal. The reason for this is after a workout the body is prepared to absorb the nutrients more so than first thing in the morning. When you workout you burn muscle glycogen (carbohydrates stored in muscles).

After a workout, the body wants to replenish lost glycogen and this therefore increases their ability to metabolize carbohydrates, making post-workout the best time to eat carbohydrates.

Note that if your post-workout meal is your last meal of the day, you still must eat your starchy carbohydrates. No matter what time of day your finish your workout, even right before bed, is still prime time to eat complex carbohydrates.
